This is fic for a book I’m almost positive nobody following me has read: Frostflower and Thorn, by Phyllis Ann Karr. It’s about a world a few centuries post-apocalypse. Specifically, about a sorceress named Frostflower, a female warrior named Thorn, and Thorn/Frostflower’s newborn baby. Thorn bore it, Frostflower’s raising it. I’m only a quarter of the way in, and the les-yay is strong in this one. It makes me so, so happy.

“Tell me about my mother,” Starwind says, when he’s a boy of nearly seven. Frostflower’s breath catches in her throat, harsh grief swamping her at the mention.

“Your mother?” she asks, wiping her hands of the worn cotton of her apron. “Wind, where did you even hear of her?”

“Ironcreek told me that you came back with me and a body, and you buried her beneath the tangle trees,” Starwind says, looking up at her with Thorn’s twilight-colored eyes. “You didn’t buy me, did you?”

Frostflower laughs, instead of crying as she wished to. “Oh, Wind. I did buy you from her. Thorn never wanted to be a mother. But she was a good friend. The best.”

Starwind nods, looking up at her hungrily. “Mother’s name was Thorn,” he repeats, rolling the name on his tongue. Frostflower smiles weakly.

“Her name was Thorn, and she was a warrior of the common sort. She drank and she whored and she gambled, and she’d have had a borter take you out of her if I hadn’t offered her another way.” Frostflower fall silent. The rest seems too raw and too intimate to share. How could she tell her son his mother had thought she was destined for the Hellbog, and she sacrificed her life to save them anyway? The words she could not say choked her.

She had scars all up and down her body, and she cursed every other word and she had a temper like sparks falling on straw. She believed in the farmer-priest’s religion, and it twisted her up inside, but she was as kind and just and principled as any woman could be after such upbringing. She was so brave and she was the best friend I’d ever had, and I’d have given up my powers for her.

I love her, and I think she loved me.

Frostflower swallows back her tears. She is not a very good sorceress anymore, she thinks. She lies too much with silence.

I have my new driver’s license, and my replacement debit card should be here next week, so there’s that. On the other hand, I’ve apparently been getting bills for a card that’s closed, and the bank has no clue why, so…

On other fronts, I’ve got a five page paper to write, plus a crop profile on runner beans, four computer art projects to finish, and a oversized pastel landscape to complete. Finals, ugh.

Why doesn’t life have a ‘play at half-speed’ option? That’d be so helpful.

This sounds like a really great resource!

I recently read an interview with the founders of this organization, and it sounds like they are doing amazing work. They are trying to expand and serve more neighborhoods and offer extended hours, but their ability to do so hinges on donations and volunteers.

Oh wow, Ive seen art from that. I thought it was a porno comic, not something with a plot.

The worst part is that Robyn is such an amazing character. She’s proud and untrusting, realistically shaken by the assault that resulted in her lost eye, a sociopath capable of killing people without regret who knows that’s not normal or right, a kleptomaniac with a smart mouth and temper that gets her in trouble, and beneath all that, a generous and fiercely idealistic person who cannot stand bullying or cruelty. She’s complex and fucked up and so incredibly human.

The interesting, well-written graphic novel with a partially-sighted, intriguing, sociopathic but still moral female protagonist…

…completely ruined by the fact that the first chance the artist gets, he sticks her in skin-tight pants, a thong, and a fake corset that leaves most of her boobs and stomach revealed, despite the fact that it makes no sense for a)the character b)the setting, or c)the plot.

Sigh.

And it was going so well, too.

What I Mean When I Say I’m Sex-Positive

I think freedom of sexuality is something that we all need and very few of us have

I think sexual pleasure is a legitimate thing to want and ethically pursue

I do not judge people for the (consensual) sex that they have or want

I will not tolerate slut-shaming

I will not tolerate hatred of people based on gender or orientation (including asexual)

I will not tolerate hatred of sex workers

I believe comprehensive, honest, non-judgmental sex education is necessary for public health and happiness

I think understanding of sexual consent—what it is, why it matters—is sorely lacking in society and crucially important

I reject preconceptions of what kind of sexuality a person should have, whether these preconceptions are based on gender, age, culture, disability, survivor status, or basically anything else

I value people’s individual freedom of choice in determining their sex lives (including the choices not to have sex)

What I Don’t Mean

Everyone should have sex

Character archetypes and writing

One of my favorite archetypes is the character on the ledge. I love characters that get frightened and overwhelmed. Whose moments of glory are quieter and subtler than the grand finales of action flicks, and aren’t sure they’re going to make it through the long cold night to the warmth of morning. Who sometimes don’t. The ones who love, but won’t sacrifice everything for it, and are never quite sure how they feel about it. Who weep, and mourn, and fear, and hate. Who are weak.

I love characters who are in over their heads and struggling not to drown. Or characters whose lives are spiraling out of control and all they can do is hold on. HBICs and BAMFs are all well and good, but I wish archetypes beyond those could be more popular, in fandom and in the wider culture.
